SPRING VIRAEMIA OF CARP DIAGNOSED IN THE USA.

Some more bad news. The following newsflash from OIE, (the international watchdog agency for animal health) is self explanatory and important enough to warrant a special edition of KOI NEWS. Will keep you posted.

SPRING VIRAEMIA OF CARP IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

(Disease never reported before).

Information received on 11 July 2002 from Dr Peter Fernandez, Associate Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC:

Spring viraemia of carp (SVC) was identified in a hatchery in Kernersville, North Carolina. The case was diagnosed on 24 April 2002 and confirmed on 5 July 2002.

As a result of this detection, 135,000 koi were destroyed at the hatchery.

Despite the investigations, the source of the introduction of the virus into the site has not yet been identified.

Thanks to Keith Davenport of OATA in the UK, for the tip.

He concludes "In the longer term the appearance of SVC in the US may be regarded as another example of ornamental fish moving diseases around the world. I personally believe the world ornamental fish industry must review the way in which it operates or accept that tighter controls will be applied (by the authorities)"

Until next time (when we do the story on quarantining as promised)
